Mermaid Mom and Baby

Time is just flying….at least for me….seriously, where did May go???  Not that I mind seeing the end of May coming, as it is the hardest month of the year for me, with my Mom passing on Mother’s Day some years ago 🙁  And, as a friend of mine said (lovingly), “It’s hard being a momma suck without a momma” – yep.

Anyhow….enough of me moping about, let’s get on with the good news….it’s time for a brand new challenge at the Aurora Wings Challenge Blog!!!  This time, our theme is

Joyous Occasions

This can include any joyous occasion….birthday, Christmas, graduation, baby, new job, wedding, anniversary……you get the hint 🙂  Time to spread the joy!!

I made a New Baby Congratulations card for my inspiration piece.  The image that I used is from a coloring book Fishtank Fantasies that features some of Mitzi Sato-Wiuff’s work.  It is published by Ellen Million Graphics, and can be found here.  I was honored to receive this book…and others….when they were available in PDF format, as an anonymous gift from a special Secret Santa, thank you thank you thank you!!!  This image can also be found, without the background, as a set, HERE at the Aurora Wings Etsy store, and HERE at the Aurora Wings.com store.

As some of you know, I tend to print my images on the small side, but I’m too cheap to waste good paper and throw it out!!! Well, I really outdid myself when I printed this beauty out!!  I took a picture with a Copic Sketch marker as a reference:

When I realized her head was smaller than the end of a Copic marker, I almost reprinted the image….but I gave it my best shot and was thrilled with the amount of detail that I managed in the image 🙂  I added some highlights and accents with white gel pen, and some MS glitter pens.  I sponged on some Distress Oxide Ink between the swirly waves in the background.

I used some golden yellow CS to cut out some “bubbles”, and a die…. from …. I think it’s a Spellbinders set ….. to cut a pretty white rectangle to use as a layer.  I added some white Liquid Pearl accents, and a sentiment cut with a Tattered Lace die.  So happy with how this finally turned out 🙂

I’d like to enter the following challenges with this:

Classic Design Team Open Challenge – #25 ATG

A Perfect Time to Craft Open Challenge – #05 ATG

Crafts Galore Encore Challenge – May ATG

Dreaming of Scrap – #55 Anything Sweetness (how much sweeter is a baby?)

Papercraft Business – #6 ATG with optional Mother’s Day (this is the closest I get to a Mother’s Day card now)

  1. OMG, Susan! I can’t believe all of the fabulous detail you’ve managed in your coloring on such a small scale! My eyes are going buggy just imagining it. Really love this full version of the image and the cool way you did the background. Your gorgeous die cuts frame it beautifully and enhance the underwater feel. Love the yellow. Makes it all pop and adds to the happy feel of this Joyous Occasion. xxD

  2. I suspected that the image must have been printed somewhat small to be made into a card, but wow! The pic with the Copic really puts it into perspective, doesn’t it? I don’t know how you pulled it all off on such a small scale – with the background colored and all! Thank you so much for this awesome inspiration for our new challenge today at Aurora Wings, Susan! Mitzi xxx

  3. WOw – your card is amazing !! I love all of the details and layers – your colouring is awesome. Thanks for sharing it with us at Papercraft Business Challenge – I hope you can come back next month – I would love to see more of your work!

  4. Hi Susan, you’re not wrong about time flying! May feels like it only lasted a week lol. Sorry to hear about the passing of your Mum xx Your design is beautiful. Omgoodness the work you’ve put into your colouring & how beautiful your colouring skills are. I’d be the same in regards to the head being smaller than the Copic marker but you did an absolute awesome job! Thank you for participating in our papercraft challenge & we hope you will join us again in the next one 🙂
